New Experiences

Wassup everybody,

It's been a minute since I wrote a blog post. A lot has happened since my last post. I'm currently sitting in a desk at Mariners Church in Irvine, CA at my new job. Just yesterday I moved to Irvine to begin working in the Global Outreach department of Mariners Church as a Latin America Coordinator and representative of the Lo Mejor Del Trigo Church in Tijuana. It's weird being back in the US and working here after three months of being a missionary in Tijuana. I had a great time and God did so much in my life while I was there. I am super blessed to have the opportunity to work at Mariners Church, and I know that God has big things planned! I am really happy that I get to continue working with Pastor Daniel and fam as a representative of theirs here in the US. I'll get to go back and forth as part of my job, so I am looking forward to keeping that relationship alive and growing it in the future! I am also looking forward to making new friendships and relationships here at Mariners and hopefully with other partner churches. I am a part of the Global Residency program and am one of 4, one more is supposed to join us from Uganda, representing partner churches. There are two from Kenya, one from Germany, and me (representing Mexico) so far. I am super honored to be able to represent the LMT Church in Tijuana here and hopefully I represent them well!

I am looking forward to living in California! So far the first night went well, we had a global outreach team hangout and got to know each other better. It was a great time and we got Thai food, which is my first Thai food in over 4 months!!! I, for one, am incredibly happy that there are Asian food restaurants everywhere here in Irvine! I cannot wait to get out and explore the city as well as get acquainted with the church and the surrounding area. I'll hopefully keep you guys more in the loop here in the coming weeks/months and make more of a concentrated effort to document what the Lord is teaching me and whatnot. So stay tuned and please continue to pray for me!

Thank you guys! God bless!

Crossroads (Which fork do I use for salad?)

Hey yall,

Despite the title this isn't going to be a purposefully humorous post. I have some very real, serious decisions to make in the next couple weeks/month. As many of you know may or may not know, my title at Christ for the City is STI, Short Term Intern. My stay here in TJ with CFCI isn't meant to be permanent, and to be frank, it hasn't been cheap to stay down here. One or two months is fine but it is coming to the point where I need to find a source of financial support to stay here or a way of making making and a place to live. But despite that, I still want to stay and accomplish some things. The Lord has placed on my heart the desire to see some things through down here. If it truly was Him putting them on my heart I know that He will find a perfect solution for me to stay down here in TJ. But if that isn't in the cards, I have a couple other potential options. I am hoping to stay down in the SoCal/TJ area to continue being used by the ministry down here. If I move back to the US I would love to stay in Cali and be close to the border where I can still go down to help out. So if you guys could keep me in prayer about what the Lord would have me do. I'm not going to go into detail here about my potential options, but I'm hoping that will prompt you, my readers, to ask me what specifically you can pray about. God is great and will continue to be so despite anything, and I have been blessed beyond reason to be partnered with Lo Mejor Del Trigo. It is 100% clear this is exactly what God had for me when I moved down here. So please pray for me and the ministry.

Love you guys,
Jwash

Slightly humorous deviations / Comedy corner:

 - I miss cheese. They have cheese down here. But it tastes and has the consistency of rubber to me. Probably the only real thing I miss about WI besides my family.
 - Just kidding. I also miss Arbys.
 - Having gone back to the US twice in the last three weeks, I find it odd/weird to be back among Americans.
 - I was included in the "Latino" crowd during a joke while we visited Mariners Church in Irvine, CA. Apparently I look Mexican to Americans in SoCal?
 - I find it fun being referred to as "gringo". Some may find it insulting, but I wear it like a badge of honor. Yes I'm a gringo. No you aren't a better soccer player than me just because I'm American. Jokes on you.
 - Mexican slang cracks me up. And Mexicans are apparently like black people when it comes to slang. Lots of words with double meanings. Who knew?
 - I met another mixed guy at Mariners church who referred to me as his "mulatto brother" when we were talking about being mixed in a meeting. Instant respect! He knows what's good.
 - I got food poisoning for the first time in Mexico on Monday. I slept on a bathroom floor like a boss. Be jealous.
 - I miss Korean food. We passed a Korean bbq in Cali, and I wanted it so badly. I still want it badly.
 - They have not been successful in finding my Mexican soul mate yet. Multiple people are trying to find her/introduce me to her.

Thanks for tuning in!

A Little Humor For Yall

Hello folks,

So as opposed to the normal check up and spill the beans about what's new and all that good stuff, I thought it would be funny to do a humorous post about the comings and goings in Tijuana.

- First off, other American missionaries never realize I'm American. I've been told "Wow your English is really good!" multiple times followed by surprise when I tell them I'm American. I guess I must look Mexican to your average run of the mill American missionary.
- Mexicans tend to know I'm not Mexican, but I've been told multiple times that I look Puerto Rican. Nobody believes me when I tell them my father is black.
- Getting hit on by a cashier at a DQ in a mall when I was out with my buddy one weekend was hilarious. She could tell I was American even though my buddy and I were speaking in Spanish, and she started talking to us in English. Her English was pretty decent, but it was funny because she complimented my eyes, my accent, and asked why I was in Tijuana. Another worker interjected herself into the conversation too although it was clear her English wasn't as good. Good times.
- The teen guys I've become cool with love the black culture they see on Vine and Youtube. I made the unfortunate but hilarious mistake of making a Vine trend called "Smack Cam" popular when I showed them a bunch of smack cam videos. I have to make sure to keep my reputation up since I am the only black person down here. BUT I am still the reigning king of the smack cam here because I got one guy on video with whipped cream. They have also fallen in love with black slang. I've been teaching them some phrases that are common. It's super funny.
- The general surprise/shock when the local population realizes that I'm an American that knows what to do with a soccer ball. Some of the kids are really good but I've done my share of embarrassing people.
- Driving down here is nuts. Even though I learned how to drive in the city its a whole new beast down here. I've driven once down here so far and it was an interesting experience. I'm very lucky I'm not a timid driver. Timid drivers would get eaten alive down here.
- Being single means that all my Mexican buddies in the church are playing match maker with me and their friends. It's quite entertaining.
- Little Caesars pizza tastes the same here. It's great, but what the heck USA?!?! Little Caesars down here has a drive thru! GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER USA!
- For the first time in my life I saw a movie before it was released in theaters. Movie piracy down here is no joke. So if you haven't seen the Expendables 3 yet, go see it. It's incredible.
- Tacos. Until you've had tacos on the street in Mexico, you haven't had real tacos. You've been lied to. Tacos down here are super delicious. They keep joking with me, at least I think they are, that some of the meat is from stray dogs. Whatever it is its delicious so keep it coming.
- On that note, stray dogs are either really friendly or leave you alone. The only crazy dogs I've seen down here are the domesticated ones. And I think it's because they see the ones that are free to do whatever. But there is one dog in my neighborhood that has a bad reputation for killing other strays. It looks like somebody crossed a pitbull with a rottweiler, complete with plenty battle scars to prove he is the baddest. Scary looking dog.
- The police down here are armed to the teeth. They carry big rifles with them wherever they go. Luckily they aren't like American cops that are always in your business, otherwise they would be very intimidating.
- Generally speaking, the rules of the road mean nothing here. Speeding doesn't matter, no one wears seat belts, in fact, I was told its a bad habit to wear them unless you are crossing the border to "the other side". I've also rode in the back of a pickup truck on the highway, stood on the back of a flatbed truck while we drove to pick up supplies for a new church. All sorts of new, probably dangerous experiences.
- I like Mexican Chinese food better than American Chinese food. More flavor, less grease. Sorry to my Chinese friends back in the States or my friends that love Chinese food.
- I still get a kick out of Asians speaking Spanish. It's awesome and their accents are awesome.
- Every Asian is a "chino" to Mexicans. Doesn't matter where you are from. I've been told multiple times that there is no difference between Chinese, Koreans, Japanese, etc. And then I remind them that there is also no difference between Mexicans, Guatemalans (Mexicans do NOT like Guatemalans), Colombians, etc. Let the Latin firey spirit commence! *****Disclaimer***** I do NOT believe that there is no difference between Mexians and other Latinos. It's an example to show them how off their evaluation of Asian people groups is. Try it sometime. Hilarious conversation to have. But I encourage actually knowing the differences between Asian cultures before attempting.

So in general, whether it's playing football in the streets, having hilarious conversations, being mistaken for a Mexican by other Americans or anything for that matter, times are good down here. The Lord is great, and I know without a doubt He brought me down here on purpose. So please keep praying for me and the ministry down here.

Love you guys,
Jordan

Updates and Such! Holla!

Hey folks,

Been a minute since I posted a new message. Just a quick update on what's going down in the life and times of yours truly. Johanna, the woman who came with me to Tijuana, is leaving Friday morning to return to Las Vegas. So starting Friday I will be the only American working at the church, which I am totally fine with, but it will definitely be different to be on my own so to speak.
I am also in the planning stages, and I will have a meeting with the Pastor and his family once he gets back from South Africa, about starting free English classes for the kids in the church. It has been on my heart/mind to start English classes for the kids in the church, and possibly later outside the church, as a ministry. I enjoy constructing houses and what not, don't get me wrong, but my talents definitely lie more in working with people and relating with people from different cultures. I think teaching basic English classes would be an awesome way to serve the people of the church since English classes are not easy to find and are typically expensive. I relish the potential opportunity to add this to my list the list of ways God is using me in the community.
So as usual, I appreciate the prayers and hope that you will continue to keep me in your prayers as I continue to be stretched and molded by God!

Love you guys,
Jordan

Prayer requests:
- Safe return for Pastor Daniel and his wife from South Africa this weekend.
- Prayer that God would mold and shape this English teaching idea into something he can use for His glory.
- Prayer for a safe trip back home for Johanna.
- Prayer for continued physical health as we have been doing a few construction jobs lately and it can be semi-dangerous working with power tools and transporting materials around work sites.
- Prayer that I would be a Godly example of an older male Christian to the young guys I have begun to have an influence on. I have my own posse so to speak and I want to show them that you can have fun in life and still maintain a close relationship with the Lord.
- Prayers of thanksgiving that He has already blessed me with amazing friendships and that I would continue to make new ones.
- Finally, prayer that God would lead me on my next steps in life. I have a lot to consider in the next month or so regarding what I do after this is over. I have considered trying to get a job at the US Embassy in Tijuana, attempting to stay on longer as a missionary (which would require that I find a way to get more funding), and I have considered attempting to stay in the San Diego area as well. I love it down here, and I would love the opportunity to work close to the church down here so I could stay involved in what they are doing.

Thanks!

First Week

Wassup everybody!

So the first week here has passed without a hitch, thank you Jesus! I've gotten pretty settled in as far as I know, you would have to ask some of my friends here how I'm handling Spanish/Spanglish 24/7. I think I'm doing a good job! I'll give a brief highlight reel of the first week so far, and then after that I'll outline what I'll be doing this coming week for you guys so you can be in prayer for what's going on.

Week so far:
- So far this week during the mornings we cleaned the church and the church dorms, which is where I am staying, and then prepared for VBS (Vacation Bible School for those who don't know) at the church. VBS was just this week, but it was awesome! We had a lot of kids show up from the neighborhood. They did a group session with games and dancing before breaking off into groups based on age. After their lesson, they all shared a meal at the church before heading out around noon. Preparing food for 40+ kids everyday took a lot of time, and I must say I fried more tortillas and flipped more pancakes than in my 23 years combined in a couple days!
- After VBS we pretty much had the afternoons to ourselves. So my afternoons/evenings consisted of playing soccer in the street, playing cards with the pastor's family, exploring the town a bit, and speaking a lot of Spanish. The people in the church are incredibly friendly and hospitable and have a very strong desire to see God work in their community. I love how down to earth they are and their passion for the Lord. It's very inspiring!
- Highlight of the week! Drum roll please! Men's retreat this weekend! Friday about 10 guys, including two boys, 15 & 9, set out for the church's retreat home in a city on the coast called Rosarito. It's a touristy city with an AWESOME beach! We arrived around 10:30ish at night and immediately after dropping our bags had a praise and worship session in the basement, following some light snacking. That was incredible just to see a group of guys totally in tune with the Lord, even if the singing wasn't totally in tune (but I won't say anything if you don't). It was an incredible time of bonding with them and with the Lord. I crashed around 12:30-12:45 to avoid the inevitable zombie syndrome I get with little sleep, but some of the guys stayed up as late as 2-3am. We got up at 6 to have a devotional before eating breakfast. After breakfast we had another praise and worship session and shared our testimonies of how we came to know the Lord. Once that was finished, we packed up and headed to the beach where we spent a couple hours playing soccer on the beach right near the water. That was really fun! Afterwards, we headed to another church for a conference before heading back to El Nino, which is the colonia (colony in English which is what they call the little townish establishments on the edge of the city) that I am staying in.
- Today was the first Sunday I was here and my first normal service. It was AWESOME! The praise and worship was super incredible and the service was great. The people here are incredibly desperate for the Lord to work on them and on their community. It's awe inspiring how passionate the Christian community is here. I think it's safe to say a little struggle could do the American church body some good. After that I went with another missionary family to help out with a missionary camp for lack of a better word. It's called Global Expeditions and they bring kids aged 14-22ish to do VBS and home building here in rural Baja California. There are between 200-300 kids from the US and Canada primarily here for the whole week. That is what I will be helping with this coming week, so I am very excited to be working along side these young kids as they are God's hands and feet this week in the Tijuana area and surrounding colonias.
- Funny story. I have become the topic of interest at church for three reasons. I am of mixed race (which they find very interesting and there have been no end of hilarious jokes and such), the fact that I'm an American and I can play soccer well (I'm guessing that isn't something they expect when American guys come), and the fact that the winter in Wisconsin is like death itself. They are all shocked to hear how cold it gets, how long winter lasts, and how much it snows there. 99% of the people here have never seen snow and find the concept fascinating. I do not share their fascination with the white plague, but I humor their curiosity regaling them with tales of white Christmas', blizzards/white outs, and the eternal cold that is the never ending Wisconsin winter season. They find it utterly fascinating and laugh when I tell them I love the weather down here that seems to be perpetually in the mid to high 70's during the day and drops to mid 60's at night. Climate perfection if I have ever heard of such.

So enough humor and as usual your prayers and support are GREATLY appreciated. I love you guys!

Dios bendiga!
Jordan

Prayer Requests:
- Travel mercies for the Global Expeditions kids and us as we travel to and from their camp and the homes we will be building. We are going to be building homes for six families.
- Physical safety in and around construction areas.
- Prayer for the continued physical safety for me as I will be doing some more rigorous work this coming week. So far so good!
- That I would continue to make good friendships with the people in the church and the community. The Lord has already blessed me with two good friends Abbi (the pastor's daughter) and her husband Eliut. They are both a two ish years younger than me so it's awesome to have see them everyday and spend time with them. And they both speak English which helps so sometimes I can slip into Spanglish if needed.
- That I would be a good example to the little homies that I have met through church. They are very curious and have a never ending flow of questions about life in the US, etc.
- Please keep Pastor Daniel and his family in prayer. One of his best friends had a son pass away this past week in a sudden plane crash. It has hit the family pretty hard as they are close with his family who belong to a partner church in San Diego.

Arrival in Tijuana

Alright then yall I have officially landed in Tijuana! After landing in San Diego around 10:30am (PST) the pastor, whose name is Daniel, picked me up immediately from the airport. After that he took me to the condo in San Diego where his son lives with his wife, newborn son and mother stay. After being introduced to the family we went immediately to work! We picked up backpacks to bring back to Tijuana with us for the childrens ministry they do in Tijuana at their church. Then we ran a few other errands, he gave me a tour of the downtown San Diego area and we picked up my partner from the airport. I was a bit surprised, actually quite surprised, by how big of a change it was once we crossed the border. Even the poorest neighborhoods in the US don't compare to the poor neighborhoods here. The people seem very down to Earth and friendly so far, and I am looking forward to learning all I can and hopefully not getting in peoples way!

I will be staying in a dorm behind the sanctuary in a neighborhood called El Nino. It seems to be a somewhat poor area, but the tacos we had at a taco shack were super good! I think I can get used to this authentic Mexican food thing. I'll be checking in with insights and pictures and what not on as regular a basis as I can once I get my schedule somewhat figured out so stay alert for upcoming news! I'll also be keeping my facebook updated if you guys want to check that out too!

Thanks and God bless,

Jordan

Prayer requests:
- Getting settled in to Tijuana.
- Physical and spiritual safety as I am in a new, foreign environment with new challenges and risks.
- That I will be physically healthy because they apparently have a lot of work for us to do! I would hate to get sick and leave them hanging on the work. So physical health is important!

Preparation

Hello everyone!

For those that will be keeping up with my blog posts thank you very much! I hope not to bore you with the adventures I will be having! ;)

I leave two weeks from tomorrow for San Diego where I will be picked up at the airport and cross the border into Baja California to spend the foreseeable future in Tijuana. These last two weeks will consist of packing, reading traveler safety information for Tijuana/Mexico in general, visiting with family and friends and general preparation. It still hasn't quite sunk in yet that the Lord blessed me with this opportunity, but I know it will once that flight takes off from Chicago on the 14th. Lord knows I'm eager! If you guys have any comments feel free to leave them here on my blog or feel free to shoot me a message on facebook or an email. I will try to get to your comments/questions as quickly as I am able. I do not yet know what my days will consist of and the consistency of my internet access, so I will keep you posted!

So thanks for the prayers and the support!

Prayer requests:
- That preparations would go well.
- That my last two weeks here in Milwaukee will be fruitful.
- Safe travels to Mexico for myself and for my partner Johanna who is flying from Las Vegas.
